Hey,
Does anyone know how to make a basic copy-protect for your own dvds. I don't mean anything overly crazy but just something that would thwart the average joe. I know anyone who was really so motivated would find a way regardless, and I'm okay with that. I am just trying to figure out how to do something basic. Does anyone know, or could help me out?

RE: Wondering about encrypting my own work.
As far as i know if you have Encore DVD you can add copy protection but it doesn't get applied until you have a duplication house do the burning. It was weird... something like you can set the disc up for copy protection and then if you have a real duplicatoin house do it, then they actually make the disc hard to copy... it tells you somewhere in teh help menus... if i get motivated enough i will check into it.

So their isn't anything simple, that I could just do to the disc myself?

Understanding copy protection
You can use copy protection to limit or prevent duplication of your content. Copy protection is turned off by default for each new project. If copy protection is required, replication must be made from a digital linear tape (DLT).
Adobe Encore DVD employs three types of copy protection: Content Scrambling System (CSS), Macrovision (also called the Analog Protection System), and CGMS
CSS
encrypts the video data, and then includes decryption keys that can only be read from the original disc. Duplicated copies do not include the decryption keys, so the video remains scrambled. This method is intended to prevent playing back digital copies of protected data.
Macrovision
produces similar results, but is intended to prevent playing back recordings made from DVD to analog video devices, such as VCRs. Macrovision-encoded data sends electronic pulses to the analog device to disrupt recording sync, thereby scrambling the recorded image. There are three different types of Macrovision protection, all of which you can employ in Adobe Encore DVD.
CGMS
restricts the number of copies that can be made of your disc.
------------------
To set copy protection for a project:
Choose Edit > Preferences > Mastering.
Select the Copy protection on box.
Do any of the following and click OK:
Select CSS off or CSS on to turn the Content Scrambling System off or on.
In the CGMS menu, choose the number of times a copy can be made.
In the Macrovision menu, choose the type of Macrovision protection you want.

RE: Re: RE: Wondering about encrypting my own work.
CSS requires some sort of industrial licence so can only be done by a proper duplication house. Encore is a bit cr** really because it makes you think it can do the encryption but all it does is allow you set a few flags to tell the duplication house to do it. It is really no different to giving the duplication house a piece of paper with "add encryption to this disc" on it
And its all pointless because even casual copying of CSS protected discs is easy.
Do you really want to prevent someone copying your stuff? For our films we positively encourage it !!
